Kabylie, massif montagneux du nord-est de l'Algérie, bordant la Méditerranée, situé à l'est d'Alger et de la Mitidja. Pendant la guerre d'Algérie (1954-1962), la Kabylie a été au centre de nombreuses opérations de guérilla en raison de son caractère escarpé et de la végétation qui la couvre. La Grande Kabylie, dont la ville principale est Tizi Ouzou, surplombe la Méditerranée et culmine à 2 308 m au Lalla-Khadidja. Elle est limitée au sud par l'imposant massif du Djurdjura qui domine la vallée de la Soumam, une rivière qui la sépare de la Petite Kabylie et se jette dans la Méditerranée près du port de Bejaïa (Bougie). La Petite Kabylie, dominée par le djebel Babor, est moins élevée, plus ouverte sur la mer et le golfe de Bejaïa et soulignée d'une superbe corniche. La Grande Kabylie est la région la plus peuplée avec une forte densité de population. Les Kabyles cultivent l'olivier et le figuier, l'orge et le blé dur, et pratiquent un petit élevage familial. Ils sont berbérophones. De par leur position géographique, ils se sont trouvés sur la route des conquérants et ont toujours opposé une résistance farouche, ne serait-ce que par leur langue. À notre époque, ils en revendiquent l'usage dans l'enseignement et les médias. Pays d'immigration vers les grandes villes et la France, la Kabylie est dotée de fortes structures sociales qui permettent aux hommes de partir longtemps au loin, sachant que le système familial traditionnel prendra en charge sa famille restée au pays.
